Looking at picking up an inexpensive 1G manual Insight later this year for work. Carrying a spool of cable, equipment, backpack, and sometimes a second person in an NC Miata is fairly untenable. If the price is right, my mileage checks could pay for an Insight in about 14 months. I’m pretty familiar with how to rebuild the NiMH battery packs but I was just curious if anyone here had one and what the ownership experience was like. I’m not seeing any for sale locally at the moment but they seem to pop up every couple of months.

Compelling argument

There’s a guy I autocross with who has a K24 swapped Insight. That car is way faster than anything with 160hp has any right to be. Would be scary fast with a JDM K24.

I wish i had one but no i dont

no but the owner of the place where we g ot our christmas tree, has one. I’m not sure if its manual or not.

Huh, there’s one with a manual for sale in my city for under $3k.
Interesting...
Though, I did notice that a CRZ can be found for roughly the same price, and it’s also available with a manual.
I know it’s not rated anywhere near the Insight for gas mileage, but I’ve heard it’s pretty fun and it looks a lot better, not to mention that they’re 10 years newer...

Looking for stuff around the $ 2500 range. I do like how the CRZ looks but I’m not dropping a load of money for a practical car for work. It’s gonna be a cheap insanely fuel efficient hatchback beater.

Lmao buy a Geo Metro with a manual (jk don’t they’re super ugly).

TSX K24 has 201 HP, 166lb-ft

Gotcha.
Well, if you want to come to Omaha, there’s an insight with 211k miles listed at $2900 at a dealer.

These are cool, but they have some drawbacks. For one, they have a freaky weird tire size, so in spite of being tiny little things, they’re expensive, limited, and wear faster. You’d actually be better off with a Geo Metro if you want to be ridiculously frugal.
The CRZ idea is also solid. Far more tires, better tires, and more quality cheap ones available. Fuel economy is still exceptional. Safety features are radically better, as well, which is why the fuel economy is not quite as high.

Fun fact about the CR-Z: A base version only has a payload of about 400 pounds. The top spec only gets you about 100 more pounds. lol That means two average Americans will make it technically overweight. I can see why they removed the rear seats!

True. This K24 came out of a rear ended Accord though.

Huh, looks like a similarly built Fit is more than double that rating (850lbs).
That is odd, but it sounds like it’s a ploy to limit Honda’s liability for any issues caused by heavy loads. Appparently there is an “Undisclosed margin of safety” added to prevent people from suing after doing stupid things while heavily loaded.

I know! Even the little smart fortwo bests the CR-Z despite being smaller. I wonder how big that margin is ?

That’s a decent deal honestly. Also I did some more research on the CRZ and they really don’t get great fuel economy... at all.

CRZs look to be twice as expensive and 50-75% the fuel economy while being, IMO, uglier. Which is a bummer. Geo Metro is a neat idea but they’re absurdly difficult to get ahold of and the interior would be difficult to live with.

Yeah, they tried to make a hybrid sport compact, and it wasn’t amazing at either task.
Though, it wasn’t horrible for either either.
0-60 in 8.8 (vs 10.3 seconds for a Mazda 2, or 10.5 for 2000 insight, or 10.9 for 2011 insight )
31-37mpg (compared to 29-34 for a Mazda 2, or 39-41 for 2011 insight)
Plus, you can get a supercharger for the CR-Z too! Nearly 200hp from some of the kits.
If it was a little lighter and had a back seat, it might not have been as big of a flop. I kind of want one, just because of it’s weirdness.

CRXes are awesome but man have you seen prices for them lately?

I have been considering picking up one of these as a commuter/project. There are several under 3 k with a dead battery, and I am fortunate that there is a battery supplier in my town. The MPG/dollar really can’t be beat.
![]() 02/14/2020 at 16:21 |

No please dont tell me they are jumping too.... I know it can be hard to find one thats not beat but still around $ 3k here (Ohio)

I’ve never looked at the suspension of an Insight but I bet with different wheels you could solve those tire issues.
![]() 02/14/2020 at 18:40 |

Clean CRX prices are insane. They all got beat to shit, stolen, or rusted away.

How about a Fit? Or... Even a Prius? Both can be found sub $3k in decent shape nowadays, and they're about as simple as commuters get
![]() 02/14/2020 at 19:54 |

Fit’s too new, would cost too much to insure. Prius doesn’t have stick.

I thought they were all manuals?

Dunno, could be

If you change the wheels/tires, you’ll likely reduce fuel economy.
